# Context Window

> How LOIS for Word Composer remembers and processes contract content during a conversation, including context window limits, retention, and chat history.

When you're reviewing a contract in Composer, you might reference a definition from page 3 while asking about an indemnification clause on page 40. Composer keeps track of both because of its context window.

## What the context window includes

The context window is everything Composer can "see" at once during your conversation:

* The document you're reviewing
* Any files you've uploaded
* Your Company Profile
* Your playbook (if selected)
* The full conversation history in the current chat

All of this information stays available as you ask follow-up questions, so Composer can connect details across different parts of a document or reference something you discussed earlier.

## Capacity

Composer can handle substantial amounts of information:

* Individual documents up to 1000 pages
* Multiple documents in a single conversation
* Long back-and-forth conversations with many exchanges

For best results, keep conversations focused on 3-5 documents. Uploading too many files at once (15+) can cause processing issues.

## How it affects your work

**Cross-references stay connected.** When you ask about a liability cap, Composer remembers the definition of "Losses" from earlier in the agreement. You don't need to re-explain context you've already established.

**Conversations build on themselves.** If you ask Composer to review indemnification, then follow up with "now check the liability cap," it understands you're continuing the same review. Earlier findings inform later analysis.

**Company context travels with you.** Your Company Profile and playbook rules are part of the context, so Composer applies your standards without you repeating them in every prompt.

## When context gets long

Very long conversations eventually approach the context window limit. When this happens:

* The earliest messages in your conversation may drop out of context
* Composer may lose track of details from much earlier in the chat
* Starting a new chat resets the context

If you notice Composer forgetting things you discussed earlier, it's usually a sign to start a fresh conversation.

## Tips for managing context

* Start new chats for unrelated tasks rather than reusing old conversations
* Upload only the documents relevant to your current task
* For very long documents, tell Composer which sections to focus on
* If a conversation gets unwieldy, summarize key points and start fresh
