Plan mode gives you a checkpoint before LOIS begins drafting. Instead of going directly from your request to a draft, LOIS researches the task and proposes an approach for you to review. You can confirm the intended structure and sources, answer open questions, and refine the plan before LOIS writes anything.

When to use Plan mode

Use Plan when:
  • Drafting a long or complex document
  • Working from several sources
  • Making decisions that affect the structure or substance of the draft
  • Reviewing the approach before LOIS begins writing
For straightforward, well-scoped edits, use Edit automatically. Use Ask before edits when you want to approve each change before LOIS applies it.

Select an approval mode

Plan is one of three approval modes in Composer. Edit automatically is selected by default. Open the approval menu at the bottom left of Composer to choose a mode. With your cursor in the prompt window, you can also press Shift+Tab to cycle through the modes.

How to use Plan mode

1. Enter your request

Open the LOIS for Word add-in to Composer and describe what you want to create. Include any relevant instructions, documents, templates, or other context. Select Plan from the approval menu, then send your request. You can select Plan before or after entering your prompt, as long as it is selected when you send.

2. Review the plan

The plan appears in Composer and includes:
  • Objective — what LOIS intends to draft
  • Proposed outline — how LOIS plans to structure the draft
  • Open questions — any decisions or information LOIS needs from you
  • Sources — the documents LOIS intends to use
Start with the objective to confirm that LOIS understood your request. Then review the outline, sources, and open questions before proceeding. For longer plans, select the expand arrows to open the plan in a larger window. You can use the copy icon to copy the plan or select X to return to Composer.

Review the sources

Select a source to open it, then use Back to plan to return. Before drafting, confirm that:
  • The expected sources are included
  • Nothing irrelevant is in scope
  • LOIS is relying on the appropriate material
If a source should not be used, ask LOIS to remove it from the plan.

3. Refine the plan

You can give feedback directly on the plan or through the Composer prompt window.

Comment on specific text

Select text in the plan to attach feedback to a particular section, source, or open question. This works in both the inline and expanded views. Use this option to:
  • Correct an assumption
  • Add or remove an outline section
  • Identify an irrelevant source
  • Answer an open question
Select Update prompt in the expanded view, or select the up-arrow button in Composer. LOIS updates the plan based on your feedback.

Request broader changes

Use the Composer prompt window when your feedback applies to the plan as a whole. For example, you can ask LOIS to:
  • Change the scope or objective
  • Reorganize the outline
  • Use a different approach
  • Add or remove sources
LOIS drafts from the latest version of the plan, including any changes you request.

4. Start drafting

Once you’re satisfied with the plan, tell LOIS to begin drafting in the Composer prompt window. LOIS creates the draft using the agreed approach and sources.
After drafting begins, the approval mode changes to Edit automatically, so later prompts apply edits without asking for approval first.
